It has been studied as part of a series of beta-aminoxypropionic acids designed to inhibit transthyretin (TTR) amyloid fibril formation. These compounds stabilize the native tetramer state of TTR by binding at the thyroid hormone sites, thereby preventing misfolding and aggregation associated with amyloid diseases such as familial amyloid polyneuropathy and senile systemic amyloidosis. The compound is structurally distinct from thyroxine and typical NSAID-like inhibitors, aiming to avoid off-target hormonal or anti-inflammatory activity. In vitro studies have shown that related compounds can significantly inhibit TTR amyloidogenesis[8].
